Hesiod

Hesiod (Ancient Greek Poet, c. 8th and 7th century BCE)

“That man is best who sees the truth himself;
Good too is he who listens to wise counsel.
But who is neither wise himself nor willing
To ponder wisdom is not worth straw.”

  • From Hesiod’s Works and Days, translated by H. A. K. Thomson in his translation of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (Penguin Classics, 2004).
