This painting, by the French artist Jean Lemaire (c. 1598-1659), was inspired by one of the early mythological stories from the life of the legendary ancient Greek hero, Theseus. In the painted art piece, Theseus and his mother Aethra—the daughter of King Pittheus of Troezen—seek out a sword and sandals left behind by King Aegeus of Athens, who was Theseus’ father in some versions of the myth. These items would help Theseus assert himself as heir in Athens. You can read more about the art and mythology HERE.
