Socrates

Socrates (c. 469-399 BCE)

“Wealth does not bring about excellence, but excellence makes wealth and everything else good for men, both individually and collectively.”

  • This saying, attributed to Socrates, was recorded in Plato’s Apology (section 30b). The translation used here is by G. M. A. Grube, revised by John M. Cooper (Hackett Publishing, 2000).
